Biography

Ellen Munroe Ridgway was an American citizen but was born, lived, and died in France. At the 1900 Olympic golf tournament she played out of the Deauville Golf Club, where she was a member. Ridgway was the daughter of banker John Munroe, who lived in Paris at 150 avenue des Champs Elysees.

Ellen Munroe married Henry Ridgway in April 1891 at the American Church of the Holy Trinity. She gave herself to charitable works, founding the clinical school of the Relief Society to Military Wounded (SSBM). She had a wing of the military hospital built at her own expense as a tuberculosis hospital and organized an additional nursing service. Ellen Ridgway was awarded the Legion of Honour, the Academic Palms, the French Recognition medal, and the Honor Medal for Epidemics.
