Mahmoud Ezzat first gained prominence as a boxer in the early 1930s as a member of the Police Club of Shubra, Cairo. Competing as a flyweight, he earned his first Egyptian national title in 1931 and earned five more consecutive ones through 1936. This led to his selection to the 1936 Berlin Olympic team, where he was defeated in his first bout by William Passmore of South Africa. Ezzat won additional Egyptian titles from 1937 through 1940, at which point he retired from active competition to work in the administrative side of the sport. For several years he also served as a coach with the national team. He died at the age of 61 in hospital following a transportation accident. His brother Mustafa was also a boxer who held national titles.
