Biography

Béla Nagy was 14-years-old when he was introduced to archery in 1957. He started competing in 1958, but in 1961 Nagy developed what is known as the inability to target, which caused his results to deteriorate. His career began again in 1970 when he read that archery had become an Olympic sport.

As soon as Nagy returned to competitive archery, he achieved outstanding results. Between 1971 and 1990 he won the national individual championship 66 times. He also represented Hungary at two Olympics, three World Championships, and four European Championships. At the 1980 Moskva Olympics he missed the podium by one shot but still took a respectable fifth place.

Nagy graduated from the Budapest University of Technology in 1971 with a degree in mechanical engineering, specializing in building engineering. Between 1981 and 1986 he was the chief engineer of the Budapest Sports Hall, and then worked in the technical department of the Hall and Market Directorate of the Budapest Municipality.

From 1998 to 2000 Nagy was the national captain of the Hungarian archery national team.
