Biography

Gaby Appel and the West German female field hockey team won the silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics round-robin tournament, finishing with six points. She was also on the team that was fifth at Seoul four years later after a 4-2 win against Canada in the classification round. Appel also became World Champion 1976 and 1981, and silver medalist in 1978 and 1986. She was also European Indoor Champion in 1981, 1985, 1987, and won the bronze medal at the 1984 Europeans. She won 209 international caps (including 28 indoor) between 1975-88.

Domestically, Appel played with Viersener THC, RTHC Bayer Leverkusen, Großflottbecker THCG (German Champions in 1979), and finally Klipper THC Hamburg. Appel was married to Günter Reimann, the long-time president of Klipper THC. She was a trained doctor’s assistant and was employed by the Hamburg health authority for 15 years. Later, she owned a naturopathic practice in Hamburg.
