Biography

German field hockey player Franziska Hentschel competed in two Olympic Games, winning the silver medal in 1992, losing the final against Spain 2-1 after extra time. Therefore, the team and all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Four years later at Atlanta the team placed a disappointing sixth.

Internationally, Hentschel won the silver medal at the 1991 European Championships, and also the bronze medal at the 1995 Europeans. In total, she played 168 international matches (including 15 indoor) from 1989-2002. Domestically, Hentschel played with HTC Stuttgarter Kickers, RTHC Bayer Leverkusen and SC 1880 Frankfurt.

By profession, Hentschel became a graduated specialist in surgery, specialising in vascular surgery, working with the Krankenhaus Nordwest, the academic teaching hospital of the Goethe University at Frankfurt on Main.
