Biography

Philip Greene was best known as a commentator of numerous football matches for Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ between 1951-85. In his youth, being a cricketer, he also reported on cricket and athletic events. He had started his career as a sports journalist as early as 1940, and in 1953 commentated the first live broadcast from mainland Europe to Ireland. Later he helped with the introduction of sports television in Ireland. A stern supporter of Shamrock Rovers football club, he later became an avid golfer. In addition, he wrote a column for the Evening Press and two books for young people including Scarlet and Gold, published in 1946. Extracts from the book were his entry for the 1948 art competitions.
