Beau Welling began serving as President of World Curling in 2022. He first became interested in curling while watching the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics where curling was a demonstration sport. Welling later moved onto the board of the USA Curling and eventually into the administration of World Curling.
Welling attended college at Brown University, graduating with a physics degree, where he played on the golf team. He obtained an International MBA from the University of South Carolina, then studied landscape design at the Rhode Island School of Design, and studied Irish Drama at Trinity College in Dublin. He later worked with the Power Generation Group at Siemens in Karlsruhe, Germany, before returning to North Carolina, becoming a successful investment banker
Welling’s father helped develop the Thornblade Club in Greer, South Carolina, a course designed by renowned golf course architect, Tom Fazio. Beau Welling interned with Fazio for three summers and then joined his staff, working on golf courses. This led to his own career as a golf course architect.
In 2007 Welling left Fazio’s organization and started his own firm, Beau Welling Design. Beau Welling Design has become best known for its collaboration with Tiger Woods. Welling has helped Woods design a course in Dubai, Al Ruwaya, and the Fields Ranch West course at PGA of American headquarters in Frisco, Texas; Bluejack National in Houston, Payne’s Valley in Missouri, Quinta do Lago in Portugal (also with Paul McGinley), and the Oasis Course at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas. Welling has worked with other prominent course designers, including Canadian Tom McBroom, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, and Greg Norman.
