David Chung Ming Mok was involved in the fencing community of Melbourne as a competitor, coach, referee, and mentor. Mok was highly regarded as a national referee and was a coach to several successful Australian fencers. At the VRI Club in Richmond politician Bill Shorten, who himself was an under-15 state champion in the sabre, described Mok as a fencing master. Mok was a referee at his home Olympics in Sydney in 2000 where he officiated several bouts in foil and épée contests.
