Biography

French fencing coach and referee Bruno Gaby began fencing in Pau, gaining a master’s diploma in the sport in 1979. Gaby travelled across France where he taught fencing in multiple towns and cities before moving to Portugal where he became the national sabre coach. He worked with the Portuguese team from 1989 to 1992 including coaching them at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. From 1992 he served as a member of the French National Refereeing Commission before being elected to the European Fencing Confederation Refereeing Commission in 2009.

As a referee Gaby officiated in multiple bouts at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, in addition to overseeing matches at World Championships, Grand Prix events, and World Cups. By 2014 he had started work as a coach in Malaysia and Cambodia. For the latter Gaby worked for the Fencing Federation of Cambodia, leading the national team to win gold, silver, and two bronze medals at the 2022 ASEAN University Games.
