During the 1950s Heinz Singer was the goalkeeper for the SV Polizei Hamburg handball team. The club dominated the sport in Germany throughout the decade, with Singer winning four national titles with the team. He also played in 10 matches for the German national team, all of them ending in victory, including winning the World Men’s Field Handball Championship in 1952 and 1955. When the team won their first world title the entire squad received the Silver Laurel Leaf, the highest award in German sport. After his retirement Singer became a referee in the sport, officiating in matches at the 1972 München Olympics.
