Biography

Defender Karl Kowanz was a member of the Austrian football team at the 1948 London Olympics. They lost their first-round match 3-0 to the eventual gold medallists Sweden. In total, Kowanz won 17 international caps.

Domestically, Kowanz played with SK Admira Wien (Vienna) (until 1950), FK Austria Wien (Vienna) (1950-58), and Wiener (Vienna) AC (1958-61). He helped Austria Wien win the Austrian Championship in 1950 and 1953 and Wiener AC win the Austrian Cup in 1959.

Kowanz turned to coaching after his active career and worked with Grazer AK, Sturm Graz, Badener AC, AS Admira Neustadt Wien (Vienna), and 1. Wiener (Vienna) Neustädter AC. His children Karl and Brigitte became well-known artists in Austria.
