Goalkeeper Bernd Franke was on the West German football team that lost their quarter-final against Yugoslavia 5-2 and finished fifth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He won seven full international caps and played with the Olympic team 12 times. In 1982 he was a member of the FIFA World Cup squad but was only a substitute as the team went to the final, where they lost 3-1 to Italy.
Domestically, Franke played with SV Saar 05 Saarbrücken as a youth until 1969, then from 1969-71 with Fortuna 95 Düsseldorf in the regional league, and finally in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Braunschweig from 1971-85. In total, he played 345 Bundesliga and 78 second league matches with Braunschweig. Franke later worked as a conditioning coach for seven years with the professional tennis player and non-Olympian Kristina Barrois.
