Biography

Forward Dieter Schatzschneider was on the West German football team that lost their quarter-final against Yugoslavia 5-2, and finished fifth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Schatzschneider never won a senior international cap, but played with the Olympic team 11 times and scored eight goals.

Domestically, Schatzschneider played with Hannover 96 (1978-82, 1988-89), SC Fortuna Köln (1983, 1986-87), Hamburger SV (1983-84), FC Schalke 04 (1984-86), and FC Augsburg (1989-90). In total, he played 96 Bundesliga matches and scored 28 goals. As of 2020 he was still the top scorer of the 2. Bundesliga with 154 goals from 201 matches, and was top scorer in 1983. He had a brief spell playing outside Germany with Grazer AK of Austria in 1987-88. Schatzschneider later became a coach at lower league clubs. He was also engaged as a scout with Hannover 96 for several years.
