Biography

István Géczi played from 1962-75 in the colors of FTC, the only team he played for in his career. During this time he played 507 matches, and his 309 league matches are a record for FTC goalkeepers (through 2018).

Between 15 March 1964 and 31 October 1967, Géczi defended the goal of Ferencváros for 44 months in 102 league games, never missing a game. In the 1968 season, he allowed only 0.59 goals/game, which remains a Hungarian league record (through 2018).

Géczi was a five-time Hungarian champion and twice a Cup winner. He only earned 23 caps, partly due to a five-year ban from the national team. He also competed in European and World Championships as well as the Olympics, winning silver medal at München in 1972.

After his retirement in 1975, Géczi worked as a goalkeeper coach at FTC. Besides his sports career, he worked at the University of Food and Horticulture, earned a doctorate degree and was a parliamentary representative. Based on Géczi’s proposal, the Youth and Sport Committee of the Hungarian Parliament was established.
