Biography

Winger Béla Várady was capped 36 times with the Hungarian national team between 1972-82 and scored 13 goals. His first caps came at the 1972 Olympics, where Várady played in six matches and scored two goals during the Olympic tournament. His first goal came in the first match against Iran and his second goal was the opening goal of the final match against Poland that Hungary lost 2-1 and thus Várady earned a silver medal. Várady was also selected to the 1978 Hungarian World Championship team, but did not play a match due to injury. At the club level, Várady started playing football with Putnoki VSE as a youth and from 1970-71 played with Ózdi Kohász. From 1971-83 and in 1985 he was with Vasas SC in Budapest, scoring 174 goals in 338 matches for them. With Vasas, Várady won the Hungarion title in 1977, Hungarian Cups in 1973 and 1981 and Mitropa Cup in 1983. In season 1976-77, Várady was also the top scorer of Hungarian League with 36 goals and the same season he was awarded the Silver Boot, an award awarded by European sports magazines to the second highest scorer in a domestic leagues in whole Europe during that season. From 1983-85 he played in the French League with FC Tours and from 1986-88 was with Váci Izzó in Hungary. Várady finished his career by playing one season in Austria with UFC Pama and one season back in Hungary with Magyar Kábel. In 2012, the Putnoki VSE home stadium, where he started his football career, was named after him as Béla Várady Sports Centre.
