Biography

Inside-forward Frank Ghent missed the first Republic of Ireland (then the Irish Free State) international football match against Bulgaria at the Paris Olympics on 28 May 1924. He was, however, selected for the quarter-final against Netherlands in place of Joe Kendrick and scored the only goal in a 2-1 extra-time defeat. He also scored the following day in the 3-0 win in a friendly over Estonia.

Ghent joined Athlone Town in 1919 and won a winners’ medal in the Free State Cup (now the Football Association of Ireland Cup) in 1924 in a game played on St. Patrick’s Day. It was the first and only time Athlone Town had won the FAI Cup (through 2025). They won the competition without conceding a goal and through 2025 remain one of only four team to achieve that feat. By profession Ghent was a warehouse clerk in an Athlone woollen mill.
