Mexican footballer Juan Manuel Álvarez began playing with Atlético Español in 1972, winning the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup with the team in 1975. In 1977 Álvarez joined Tecos UAG, spending the rest of his career with the club, playing in 195 matches for the team, and winning the league in the 1980–81 season. Early in his playing career he was also part of the national side that played in the football tournament at the 1972 München Olympics. One year later he played in one match for Mexico before waiting eight years for his next chance on the international stage, playing in five more matches in 1981.
Following his retirement Álvarez became a coach, spending stints with a dozen clubs in Mexico from 1988 to 2010, including spells with Tecos UAG from 1989 to 1990 and again in 2008. He finished his coaching career with the Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa from 2010 to 2011.
