Biography

Göbel, playing for Arnhem club Vitesse, succeeded Reinier Beeuwkes as the Dutch national goalkeeper. He was known for being the Dutch first keeper trying to catch the ball rather than stomp it away. He played 18 matches for the Dutch team between 1911 and 1919, being best remembered for numerous saves during the 2-1 win over England’s amateurs. In club competition, he made the finals of the national competition and cup, but never won a title. After his football career, he became a doctor.
