Biography

With 29 goals across 71 international appearances, Mahmoud Soufi is, as of June 2019, the fifth-most prolific goalscorer for the Qatari national team. For many years, he was second only to Mansour Muftah in this regard. His biggest success came at the 1992 Gulf Cup, when his country won the tournament for the first time. He was also runner-up in 1990 and 1996, as well as at the 1998 Arab Nations Cup. He also attended the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where Qatar was eliminated in the quarterfinals and ranked eighth overall among 16 nations; Soufi played in all four of the squad’s matches. Domestically, he spent nearly his entire career with Al-Ittihad (renamed Al-Gharafa Doha in 2004), beginning in 1988 and ending only in 1998, after which he spent the last two seasons of his career with Al-Arabi. During his tenure, he won four consecutive Emir of Qatar Cups (1995 through 1998), as well as the top division once in 1998 with Al-Ittihad.
