His Army training led to an appointment as a fencing professor in Brussels. In 1927 he emigrated to the United States where he worked as a fencing coach at the Fencers’ Club of New York for almost 28 years until he retired in 1955. He was the coach of the US Olympic fencing team in 1928, 1932, 1948, and 1952. His pupils won multiple US national titles.
