Johannes Vinther grew up in his native village of Nørre Broby on the island of Fyn. In 1912, he was a member of the Danish gymnastics team that won silver behind Sweden in the Swedish system at the Stockholm Olympics. In 1920, he married Dagny Vinther and in the same year the couple moved to Oure in the south-eastern part of Fyn, where Johannes became manager of the local dairy cooperative. He held this position until 1967, just one year before his death.
Vinther had three daughters with his wife. When she died early from tuberculosis, he hired a young housekeeper named Bodil to take care of the house and his children. A few years later, he married Bodil and had one more daughter with her.
