Biography

Dirk Rauin was on the West German handball squad at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics that won the silver medal after losing 18-17 in the final to Yugoslavia. Therefore, all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.

Domestically, Rauin played with VfL Gummersbach (1977-84) and won the German Championship in 1982 and 1983 and 4 DHB Cups in 1978, 1982-83, and 1985. He then played for TUSEM Essen (1984-87, and won the German title in 1986 and 1987), and latterly payed for DSC Wanne-Eickel (1987-91) in the Bundesliga. He also twice won both the European Champions Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup with Gummersbach.

Rauin later became a certified handball coach and coached several Bundesliga, second league and lower league clubs in Germany. He also worked as a special education teacher.
