Field handball was only part of the Olympic program once, at the 1936 Berlin Games. The German Reich dominated their two preliminary round matches, beating Hungary 22-0 and then the USA 29-1, before winning all three matches in the final round, including a 10-6 win over Austria in the deciding match that won the gold medal. Edgar Reinhardt played two matches in Berlin and scored four goals. With MTSA Leipzig Reinhardt won the German Championship in 1937 and 1938. He nearly won a third title in 1943 with SV Waldhof Mannheim, but they lost in the final.

Reinhardt was a very versatile sportsman, practicing track and field, life saving, and boxing. In 1944 he became the Bavarian decathlon and discus champion. During his medical studies in Heidelberg, he started playing basketball and won two German Championhips with Turnerbund Heidelberg.
