Biography

Horst Spengler was a member of the West German handball team that lost the match for the bronze medal 21-18 against Poland after extra time at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. He earned 147 international caps scoring 293 goals. In 1978 he won the World Championships with the West German national team. Domestically, he played with TV Hüttenberg from 1968-83. His father Rudolf was a well-known handball coach in Germany.

Spengler later also turned to coaching and coached SG Wallau / Massenheim, later HSG Dutenhofen / Münchholzhausen (later re-named HSG Wetzlar), and TV Lützellinden. He also briefly coached national youth teams. Finally, he was named sports director of HSG Wetzlar. By profession, he was a teacher of sports, mathematics, and physics.
