Ellie Edes grew up in Hungary but later emigrated to the United States in the mid-1950s. He attended high school in New Rochelle, New York, and started as a member of the New York Hungarian Soccer Club before being invited to the US handball team in 1969. In 1972 Edes worked as an export traffic clerk. He was an assistant coach to the 1976 US Olympic handball team, working mainly with the goalies, and was a vice-president of the US Team Handball Federation in the 1970s.
