In 1965 Malian judoka Raymond Coulibaly competed at the first edition of the African Games in Brazzaville, Congo, where he reached the semi-finals in the 80 kg category. Coulibaly continued to represent Mali at international competitions, including the 1971 World Judo Championships and the 1972 München Olympics. At the latter he lost to Chang Ping-Ho (TPE) in the opening round of the middleweight event to be eliminated. He later worked as a trainer and as the national technical director of the Malian Judo Federation (MJF), including coaching the national team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. After his death in 2019 the MJF held the Raymond Coulibaly Memorial event on an annual basis.
