Matt Folan competed for Ireland in the judo tournament at the 1972 Olympics in München, placing 11th in the heavyweight class, losing in the quarterfinal to France’s Jean-Claude Brondani. He was later involved in coaching and was the President of the Irish Judo Association. A resident of Dublin, Folan was a businessman and the owner of Gemini International Ltd, and also an active member and president of the Irish Mensa.
