Biography

Joop Gouweleeuw’s greatest success was at the 1966 European Championships, where he claimed the title in the -93 kg division. A year before, he earned a silver medal in the same competition. He participated in the first judo Olympic competitions at Tokyo 1964, where he was eliminated in the pool stage. Nationally, Gouweleeuw earned two titles, winning the 80+ kg division in 1961 and the -93 kg class in 1966. Proficient in both judo, he earned the 8th dan in 2006, and jiu-jitsu (4th dan), he opened the gym “Budo Gouweleeuw” in 1965, together with his wife. They continued to run the gym through 2010.
