Biography

Antal Hetényi sterted his sports career as a swimmer of Újpest. At the relatively late age of fifteen he switched to judo, first in Újpest, and then in the Budapesti Honvéd. In 1969 he finished first at the Hungarian championship in the lightweight division, and with the Honvéd he won four team championship titles between 1972 and 1978. Hetényi competed for the Hungarian national team between 1969 and 1973. At the 1972 München Olympics, he represented Hungary in the 70 kilogram category, where he finished in fifth place. That year he was chosen as Judoka of the Year in Hungary.

He studied both during and after his active sports career. In 1976, he graduated as a physical education teacher, and in 1981, he graduated in sociology. Hetényi retired from judo in 1978, but did not leave the tatami. He became the founder, coach, and head of the KSI SE (Central Sports School) judo department for almost forty years, receiving his master trainer diploma in 2007. He also acted as the professional vice-president and consultant of KSI SE, but he also took part in the top management of the sport, working as a secretary-general of the Hungarian Judo Association and then as its vice-president.
