Larry Nelson went to Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento, California, but later went to Japan to study judo at Tenri University. He was US Champion as a light-heavyweight in 1967, 1971, and a heavyweight in 1972. Nelson competed for a long time, winning bronze medals at the 1983 and 1987 Pan American Games as a heavyweight.
