Biography

Modern pentathlete Hermann Hölter, brother of artist Wilhelm Hölter, came seventh at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. In 1936 he was a member of the Organizing Committees for the Winter Games in Garmisch Partenkirchen and the Summer Games at Berlin.

He was a highly decorated General, and later a Lieutenant-General in World War II. He served as Chef des Generalstabs (Chief of Staff) of the 20th Mountain Army. When German capitulation came in 1945, he was captured by the Allies and was not released until 1947. During World War II he was awarded the Iron Cross class II, the Iron Cross class I, the German Cross in Gold, and the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. In 1953 he published Armee in der Arktis. Die Operationen der deutschen Lappland-Armee (Arctic Army. The Operations of the German Lappland-Army).
