Biography

Frigyes Hegedűs started playing sports from an early age, trying out swimming, tennis and table tennis. He studied at the Ludovika Military Academy where he was introduced to pentathlon. He served as a military officer for more than two years during World War II.

After the end of World War II he won the individual championship once (1952) and the team championship four times as a competitor for Csepeli MTK and then Bp. Honvéd. Between 1947 and 1955 he was a member of the Hungarian national pentathlon team. He participated in the 1948 London Olympics where he finished twelfth after being disqualified in the horse riding element. He continued to compete in equestrian sports until the end of the 1950s, after which he turned to the profession of lawyer.

In 1949, while still an active athlete, he became one of the founders and later the first coach of the pentathlon department of Bp. Honvéd. As the national team captain he established the central training of the national team. During his time there was a separate coach for each discipline, and he was also responsible for the Balczó-Török-Móna golden team, which achieved success after success between 1962 and 1966. After his unexpected replacement he began to rebuild his law practice, while continuing to help the pentathlon with his expertise: he worked as the department head of Csepel SC until 1973.
