Biography

Karl Mannström finished seventh in the first edition of modern pentathlon at the 1912 1912 Stockholm Olympics behind five compatriots and American George Patton. His best discipline by far was riding, in which he placed second.

Mannström became an officer at the fortifications in 1909 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1912. Two years later, he married Maria Angelin. In 1915, he was transferred to the Malmslätt flying school and received his diploma from the Swedish Aeronautical Society in the same year. Just one year later, Mannström set a Scandinavian altitude record with passengers of 4,000 metres. He died at the age of 31 in a plane crash with his Morane-Saulnier aircraft near Skillingaryd, now part of the Vaggeryd municipality. Mannström and his observation officer were both killed instantly.
