Biography

Hamish McLachlan was an Australian rower who helped the Aussies to fifth place in the eight at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He was an Australian Champion in the eights in 1987 and rowed that year at the World Championships in the coxed four, placing eighth. His brother, Alastair, also rowed for Australia in the 1990s.

McLachlan went into the financial world, becoming a stockbroker in Adelaide, while working for his father’s firm, Thompson Brindal. In 2003 he was accused of using his position to gain financial advantages. He was accused of transferring his own share options, which were falling in value, to his clients’ accounts in 1996-97. In 2004 he was found guilty and ordered to serve a nine-year jail sentence.
