Biography

West German boxer Reiner Gies, nicknamed “The Lord”, lost his quarter-final bout in the lightweight class at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics to the eventual championPernell Whitaker (USA) by a 5-0 decision. Four years later at Seoul Gies moved to the light-welterweight division and won a bronze medal, also losing against the eventual champion, this time the Soviet Russian Vyacheslav Yanovsky. In 1986 Gies reached the quarter-final at the World Amateur Boxing Championships.

Gies won seven national titles between 1982-89, before turning professional in 1991 after more than 300 amateur fights. He retired in 1994 after winning the International German Championships and the IBF Intercontinental Championships.
