Gerhard Boetzelen won a silver medal in double sculls with Herbert Buhtz. He was German Champion in 1929 and 1930 in the singles and in the 1931 double sculls (with Gerhard Buhtz). Boetzelen, for some time the Berlin district sports manager of the Nazi organization Kraft durch Freude (German for Strength through Joy), publicly glorified the “heroic struggle” for Stalingrad on 2 February 1943 in the official sports paper Reichssportblatt. After World War II, Boetzelen settled in the USA to avoid legal persecution in Germany.
