Thomas Schneider had his best rowing year in 1956 when, with Kurt Hipper, he won the West German double sculls title and the silver medal at the European Championships later in the season. At the end of the year, the couple just missed out on an Olympic medal, placing fourth in Melbourne. Schneider also won West German national titles in 1954 and 1957-59, and finished second in 1953 and 1955.
