Biography

Josef Steffes-Mies finished fifth in the double sculls at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics alongside Helmut Lebert. With previous partner non-Olympian Jost Krause-Wichmann, Steffes-Mies had won West German titles in 1962 and 1963. They also took bronze at the 1962 Worlds, and finished fourth at the 1963 Europeans. Steffes-Mies was by profession a civil engineer with his own company in Mainz. His son Martin also became a competitive rower and took over his engineering company in 2005.
