György Kapocsi started playing sports at the age of sixteen in his hometown. He first played football, before switching to boxing. At the age of 26, while still as an athlete of Barcs, he won his first national championship title in the light heavyweight. This was followed by five more championships in the next five years, now in the colors of Bp. Lokomotiv. He achieved his last three championships as a heavyweight. Between 1947 and 1951 he boxed for the Hungarian national team.
He participated at the London Olympics where he was eliminated due to injury against the eventual silver medalist Don Scott. He participated in three European Championships; he also finished unplaced in Dublin in 1947, Oslo in 1949, and Milan in 1951.
During his sports career he worked for the railways. He retired in 1954 and then briefly coached at Bp. Építők.
