Biography

Artúr Baján started his sports career as a fencer at the famous Salle Santelli. He later changed to rowing and skiing. As a rower, he was a member of the Hungarian coxed eights at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He was also successful in skiing as well and, after three years in Switzerland, unexpectedly won the National Nordic Combined Championship in 1912, repeating this success in 1914. Baján served as a Hussar Lieutenant and also served in the newly organized ski regiment during World War I. He was a founder member of the Hungarian Ski Association in 1913 and, until 1920, was involved with its management.

He later worked as a correspondent of Nemzet Sport, first from Roma and then from Lisboa. In 1938, he was appointed an honorary consul of Lisboa, and did not return to Hungary after World War II.
