Biography

Gustaf Brunkman was a rower from Helsingborgs RK. Together with club mates and rowers from Malmö RK, Brunkman took part in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm as part of the Roddklubben af 1912 team. In the eights, the Roddklubben af 1912 crew lost to the eventual silver medallists from the New College, Oxford in the quarter-final. Gustaf’s brother Conrad Brunkman rowed with him in the eight. One day after the end of the Olympic races, the Nordic Championship were held on the same course. Here the of the Roddklubben af 1912 won the final against Kristiania RK from Norway.

Gustaf Brunkman studied in Hälsingborg until 1907. For the next nine years, he worked in this town for the Scandinavian Credit Company. In the following years he worked for banks and insurance companies in a number of foreign countries: Deutsche Bank Berlin (1916-17), Guaranty Trust insurance company New York (1917-19) and in their offices in København (Copenhagen) and Berlin (1919-32). From 1933, Brunkman was director of Svenska Handelsbanken. In addition, he was chairman of the board of the Ragnar Berg AB and a board member of the United Whalers Ltd in London and the shipping company Skeppsbron in Stockholm. He was appointed Knight of the Order of Vasa and Knight of the Danish Order of Dannebrog.

In 1919, Gustaf Brunkman married Elisabet “Lisbeth” Larsson Hytte. They had three daughters.
