Biography

The youngest oarswoman on the 1976 Olympic eight, Peggy McCarthy was then a student at the University of Wisconsin. Two of her biggest moments have come since then. McCarthy made the 1980 Olympic team, which did not compete, but was in the eight at the Lucerne Regatta that scored an historic victory over the East German Olympic champions. In 1981 she joined four other 1980 Olympians to form a coxed four which won the Henley Royal Regatta in the first year women were allowed at Henley since the races began in 1839. Peggy McCarthy graduated with a degree in civil engineering and later worked with a large engineering firm in the Boston area.
