Biography

Auguste Reverdin was a Swiss sports shooter participating at the 1900 Paris Olympics which were held during the Exposition Universelle Internationale. He finished tied 15th in the trap shooting event. While the other seven shooting events of the Paris Olympics also doubled as the World Championships, this was not the case for the trap shooting.

Reverdin received his doctorate in medicine in Strasbourg in 1874. He served in the French ambulance service and subsequently in hospitals abroad. He returned to Geneva in 1879 and invented numerous instruments and introduced surgical improvements in the fields of anaesthesia and disinfection.

Reverdin’s work Antisepsie et asepsie chirurgicales was awarded the Prix Laborie by the Paris Académie de Médecine in 1895. He further developed a needle originally invented by his cousin Jacques Louis Reverdin and, in 1879, they co-founded the first private clinic in Geneva. In 1887, Auguste became an associate professor, and in 1899, a full professor at the surgical polyclinic in Geneva.

Reverdin was a member of numerous learned societies. He received several foreign honours and served as a correspondent for the Académie de Médecine, and an associate member of the Société de Chirurgie in Paris.
