Biography

After finishing elementary school, Jakab Bechtold chose a military career and was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1910. He fought in the 28th Hunter Regiment throughout the First World War and, due to the injuries, he became a military teacher. In 1923, he was assigned to the Mátyás Hunyadi Military School in Kőszeg as a teacher specializing in natural history, geography, German language, and drawing. In the meantime, he worked as a staff member and illustrator for several newspapers, such as Jankó Borsszem, and he was the editor of Képes Újság, later Bohóc, and the sport joke magazine Dugó.

In addition to his profession as a military teacher, he excelled as a versatile athlete in athletics, tennis, and especially shooting. In 1924 finished third in the Hungarian championship and was included in the 1924 Olympic squad. After a long break, he finished second in 1934, and a year later first the rapid-fire pistol event at the Hungarian championship. He was selected to the 1936 Berlin Olympics under the sport name of Kőszegi but did not qualify for the final. He retired in 1942 with the rank of colonel.

He left Kőszeg in 1944 and moved to Germany. Here he continued his activities as a writer, draftsman, and shooter. Based on his results he became a member of the German shooting team that was preparing for the Helsinki Olympics in 1952, but he was unable to participate due to his illness.
