Salem Salam spent nearly a half century working for Middle East Airlines, eventually rising to become its president. During this time, he helped root out corruption in the company and carried the business successfully through the Lebanese Civil War, especially helping to protect Beirut Airport during the most dangerous times. He was also an avid sportsman and developed his sport shooting skills through hunting. During the 1940s he won several national titles and also represented Lebanon as part of its inaugural Olympic delegation in 1948, placing 70th in the small-bore rifle, prone event. He was also a golfer and established a golf club in the capital city.
