Ivan Törnmarck was the son of the provincial doctor Sven Törnmarck. Ivan graduated in 1904 in Jönköping and passed the officer’s exam in 1907, and the school director’s exam in 1912. In the army he entered the Royal Göta supply unit as a sub-lieutenant. As a reserve officer, he was later promoted to lieutenant, and in 1922 to captain. From 1912 he worked as a physical education teacher at gymnasiums and high schools in Skövde, Härnösand, Uddevalla, and Jönköping. In the latter town he worked from 1919 as high school instructor. He also held training courses for secondary and gymnasium teachers.
Törnmarck also held honorary positions in Swedish school organizations and the Swedish Ski Federation. In ski sports he also received the Association for Cross-Country Promotion’s medal of merit in silver. At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 he took part in free and duelling pistol individual events, placing an excellent fifth in the latter.
With his wife Anna Maria “Maisa” (née Bäckgren), Törnmarck had two daughters and two sons. Between 1908 and 1914 he travelled around Europe including Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and England.
