Biography

Ede Herczog was a versatile sportsman competing in athletics as a sprinter and in football playing for MÚE. Around the turn of the century he volunteered as one of the first Hungarian referees. He started in the national football leagues and became referee in the top league NB-1 in 1908. Until 1919 he officiated 55 NB-1 matches. After the nomination for international matches in 1905 he was registered by FIFA in 1907. After four international matches, including the semi-final of the 1912 Olympic tournament between Denmark and the Netherlands, he retired from the international stage in 1912.

During the early period, there were no regular national coaches employed by the Hungarian Football Association but short-term assignments. Herczog coached the national team in his function of association captain in 22 matches between 1911 and 1914 including three at the 1912 Olympic Games, where the Hungarian team placed fifth as winner of the consolation round and in another nine between 1916 and 1917. During the two-year gap, Herczog served as a lieutenant in World War II. He was also active as editor of the Nemzeti Sport newspaper and wrote columns for Sporthírlap and Magyar Hírlap.

His civilian occupation was as supplier of the Pecsenyéd Equestrian Association. Herczog died in 1953 from tuberculosis.
