In 1986 Spirin was promoted to the rank of FIFA international referee and from that moment on, prestigious awards followed. Among his most important matches, he officiated in the 2nd FIFA U-16 World Cup matches Brazil v Saudi Arabia and France v Saudi Arabia (1987); Brazil v Yugoslavia at the Seoul Olympics (1988); the 5th FIFA World Youth Championship Spain v Argentina (1989); the 1990 FIFA World Cup Germany v United Arab Emirates; the first leg of the UEFA Cup final between the Italian teams of Inter Milano and A.S. With the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Spirin also decided to stop refereeing and dedicated himself to the duties of an observer, also serving on behalf of UEFA.
