Biography

Giuseppe Scarpi played football for his hometown team Dolo and then, in 1922, became the town’s first senior referee. Between 1929-43 he refereed over 180 matches in Serie A, and in 1939 won the Giovanni Mauro Award as Best Referee of the Year. During his international career, Scarpi was a linesman in the Czechoslovakia - Romania match at the 1934 FIFA World Cup, and four years later took charge of the Cuba - Romania World Cup game. He officiated in just one Olympic match, Norway - Turkey in 1936. On 6 September 1936, he officiated in the first leg of the Mitropa Cup Final between FK Austria Wien and AC Sparta Praha at the Prater Stadion, Wien. Watched by more than 40.000 fans, the match ended 0-0. A week later FK won the second leg 1-0, when the referee was another Italian Rinaldo Barlassina.
