Biography

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Jayampathy Perera played field hockey in tournaments administrated by the Colombo Hockey Association in Sri Lanka. By 1974 Perera made his début as an umpire in the sport, officiating a women’s match between Sri Lanka and Scotland. He later served as the neutral official in an eight-match series between the hockey powerhouses of India and Pakistan in 1982. Two years later he had the honour of officiating matches at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Perera also served as the Vice-President and an honorary secretary of the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation. From 1999 to 2003 he was a member of the international hockey umpires committee.
